Research and Planning - Media Language

Camerawork:
I researched the main media language and the types of shots I could use in my trailer or on my magazine/poster. I also found example of each to aid my understanding.

Establishing shot: This is an establishing shot of a library. Establishing shots are used to inform the viewer where the action is going to take place. I think this particular shot is effective as it makes the setting look big and important, typical of an establishing shot. I could use this shot at the beginning of my trailer to inform the viewer of the main setting and to show that the flat and the supernatural goings on which take place in side are superior to the people.

Close up: This is a close up from the film 'The Black Swan.' Close ups are often used to express to the reader the character's emotions. In this shot, the main character is seen to be in some state of shock or pain. I could use close ups in my trailer to express the fear my characters feel.

Medium Close up: This is a medium close up of Reese Witherspoon. Medium close ups are similar to regular close ups but express the characters feelings without revealing too much. In this shot, Witherspoon is shown to be extremely worried and the use of the prop helps aid the viewer's understanding of this - she has clearly just heard some unsettling news. I could use medium close ups in my trailer as it is a teaser trailer so I don't wait to give too much information/emotion away.

Extreme Close up: This is an extreme close up. Extreme close ups are often used to show a person's emotional state or on objects to foreshadow events. In this shot, the actor's eyes suggest he is angry and eager for revenge. This shot will be useful in my trailer to reveal my character's emotions of fear but also my 'evil' characters intentions of harm.

High Angle shot: High angle shots are usually used in scenes of confrontation to establish the difference between the superior and the vulnerable people. In this shot, Daniel Craig is shown to be inferior to whoever he is pointing his weapon at. This shot could be effective in my trailer to show the victims as weak and scared.

Low Angle shot: Like high angle shots, low angle shots are used to establish power/authority between people. In this shot, the queen of hearts is looking down both literally and metaphorically on the other character, showing her strength and superiority over him. I could use this in my trailer to show the 'evil' character as superior to its victims.

Canted angle: In a canted angle, the camera is tipped horizontally to produce an unstable image. This is effective as it suggests something unusual is about to happen which would be useful in my teaser trailer.

Sound:

I then decided to research into the different types of sound used in media and started thinking how I could incorporate them into my trailer.

Non - Digetic Sound - Not contained within the film world, so it is put on after filming e.g. background music, voice overs.
In my trailer, I will use non-diegetic sound such as music, loud screams and creaking.

Diegetic Sound - Contained within the film world e.g. dialogue, footsteps, wind, dog barking etc.
In my trailer, I will use diegetic sound such as dialogue, train, lift noises.

Sound Bridge - When sound or a piece of music is used to link different scenes or shots in a film.
I may use this technique in my trailer to connect the different scenes together.
